Brewing Day at Boss Brewing
Page 2. Now we are ready to Brew

[Alan and Kathy] Well, we are finally at the brew day. After a wonderful evening at the Tengen's celibrating New Year's Eve, Kathy and I are taking time to rejoice in our good fortune before getting to work. We are in Scott and Jodie's kitchen getting the water and other things ready to go.

The filling of the carboys to take out the garage is the first order of business. Needless to say, you should stay and watch the filling of the carboys, no matter how board you get. We didn't and had quite a water fall in their basement for a while. We are using a filter to remove all chlorine from the water before we start to boil. Also, since it is very, very cold outside, we felt we had to bring water out this way instead of the hose since the hose would freeze up very quickly.

[Our newest Sabco Keg] Here is our virgin Sabco keg. I personally think these are some of the finest brew vessels made for the home brewer. Scott just got his for a "BIG" christmas present and we are about to take it out for its first beer. All kidding aside, these kegs were one of the best investments we have ever made in the brewing equipment area. These kegs have a false, ss bottom with lots of holes so using them as both a mash vessle and as a cooking vessel is a no brainer.

Our hot water take is hoisted up on a table to give us some gravity to feed the pure water into the sparge tank. Next, we hope to invest in a pump or two so we can be a little more safe about this. Right now, we need to climb up on the table and pour the carboys into the tank. Not a pretty site, but it sure works!

[The whole system] A view of the three tanks we use to brew with. Note: We use propane at this time so keeping enough fresh air circulating in the brew works is critical for life to exist in this extreme environment.

Yes, we did have to cheat to keep the place warm enought for humans. This heater is just enough with both burners going to keep the place toasty. We were able to get a full 8 hour burn from a full tank of gas this day.
